Design the Future. Not Just a Career.
At the Kerala State Institute of Design, the Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) is not just a degree; it’s a transformative journey into thinking, making, and shaping the world through design.
Affiliated with APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, this four-year professional programme is structured to meet global design standards while remaining deeply rooted in cultural, material, and social contexts.
A Curriculum Built Like a Design Process
The B.Des. programme is structured across eight semesters, evolving from foundational learning to advanced specialization, industry exposure, and independent research.
Foundation Phase (Semester 1 & 2)
Students begin by understanding how to see, think, and create. The curriculum introduces Art & Design Fundamentals, Visual Fundamentals, Material Exploration, Typography, Photography, Moving Image Design, Communication Skills, and Digital Skills. This phase builds a strong base in visual language, observation, and creative thinking.
Core Design Phase (Semester 3 – 5)
The focus shifts to applied learning and systems thinking. Students engage in Design Studios, Design Methodology, Form Studies, Interaction Design, Design & Environment, Design Management, and Design Technology. Learning becomes project-driven, interdisciplinary, and collaborative, reflecting real-world design processes.
Specialisation & Electives
Students can shape their own learning trajectory through a wide range of electives including Animation Design, User Interface and User Experience Design, Game Design, Film and Video Design, Instructional Design, Product Design, Furniture Design, Lighting Design, Branding, Sound Design, Craft-based practices, Textile, Ceramics, and Packaging Design etc. This flexibility ensures a personalized and future-ready education.
Industry & Research Phase (Semester 6 – 8)
The final phase prepares students for professional practice. It includes advanced design studios, design research, electives, a mandatory internship, and a final thesis with viva. Students graduate with a strong portfolio, industry exposure, and a well-defined design perspective.
Learning by Doing
Design education at KSID is rooted in practice. Studio-based learning forms the core of the programme, supported by continuous internal assessment and external jury evaluations. Students engage in hands-on workshops, prototyping, material exploration, and live projects that simulate real-world challenges.
A significant portion of the curriculum is dedicated to studio practice, ensuring that students develop not just conceptual understanding but also the ability to execute ideas effectively.
Beyond the Classroom
KSID fosters a collaborative and dynamic learning ecosystem where design intersects with culture, craft, technology, and society. Students engage with artisans, industry professionals, and communities through workshops, projects, and events.
Exposure to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and digital systems ensures that students remain aligned with evolving industry demands. Opportunities for participation in conferences, publications, internships, and innovation initiatives further enrich the learning experience.
