“Independent Films Are Essential for the Nation” – Jharana Jhaveri
Kerala State Institute of Design organized a documentary screening and film discussion featuring the renowned independent filmmaker, social activist, and Visiting Professor at Savitribai Phule University, Pune, Ms. Jharana Jhaveri, as the chief guest. The event showcased her documentary “Charlie and the Coca Cola Company: Quit India”.
The film, which was banned in 2016 by the Censor Board, reached the public through online platforms, campus screenings, and film collectives across the country. Through persistent legal battles, the filmmaker successfully overcame the politically motivated ban.

She elaborated on how individual freedom and creative liberty drive progress in education, politics, and the nation. Students actively participated by sharing their personal interpretations of the concept of freedom. Ms. Jhaveri also highlighted that open perspectives and political literacy are key to creating an effective educational system and a progressive society.
Administrative Officer Mr. Ajay Kumar and Assistant Professor Mr. Darshan K also addressed the gathering.
